Matheran is a small hill station in Maharashtra. It is situated on the Western Ghats
range at an elevation of around 2,625 feet above sea level. There are approximately
38 lookout points at Matheran which offer spectacular views of the surrounding hills
and valleys. Matheran has a reasonably dense forest cover. It is located on the
Western Ghats range at a height of around 800 m above sea level. Some of the points
are the One Tree Hill Point, The Louisa Point, Hart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine
Point, Rambgh Point, and more.
Matheran is located around 100 kms from Mumbai, 120 kms from Pune and 320 kms from
Surat. The nearest railway station is Neral, which is approximately 11 kms from
Matheran. One can either rent a taxi or a horse or walk to Matheran from Neral.

By Road
Motor Vehicles are not allowed within Matheran. Tourists generally prefer to reach
Neral from Mumbai or Pune by train. However you can drive up and park your car at
Dasturi car point, or take the newly introduced mini bus shuttle from Karjat or
Neral railway stations upto Dasturi. From Dasturi you must take a 40 minute horseback
or man-pulled rickshaw ride to Matheran along a mud track.
